Legends of the Untamed Wilds: Hell Fallen

S1E1: The Road to Bramwell
Wherein the heroes thwart an ambush!

And so it came to pass that our heroes, Dargale the Human Demon Hunter, Irquiquintlan “Quint” the Dwarven Barbarian, and Torinn the Dragonborn Paladin were hired by Gundren Rockseeker to deliver a cart of supplies for him from Westmarch City to Bramwell, promising some coin now and the promise of much more profitable business later. However Gundren had to leave immediately with his bodyguard, Sildar Hallwinter, and so the Adventurers began their journey together the next morning.

The trip was mostly uneventful, allowing the group a chance to get to know one another and share a bit of their past. About 20 miles down the road, when our Adverturers discovered Sildar and Gundren’s horses dead on the road, peppered with black arrows, their saddlebags looted, and no sign of Sildar or Gundren. Just as the party was about to investigate, Dargale noticed several Goblins lying in wait. It was an Ambush!

Wasting no time, the group sprang to action, killing three and knocking one unconscious. Tying him to a tree and waking him up, the Goblin revealed his name to be Stikk, a Cragmaw Goblin tasked by his warchief Klarg to ambush the Dwarf and anyone who might show interest in the Dwarf’s activities. Klarg was apparently taking orders from an Elf known only as the Black Spider, but Stikk didn’t know more than that. It guessed that maybe Klarg would know more, and he gave up the location of the Cragmaw Hideout, a cave about 5 miles down a hidden trail…

Wherein the heroes rescue an ally!

No sooner had our heroes questioned the Goblin Stikk then a new person entered from the treeline, a Wood Elf Druid named Rolen. After a tense standoff including busted noses and Torinn knocking Rolen out and tying him to a tree (why must this happen?!?) the party decided to press onward towards their destiny at the Cragmaw hideout, leaving Stikk alone and unattended…

The Goblins made it tricky by placing traps along the way, but thanks to Dargale’s awareness the group made it through without incident. Arriving at the cave by mid-day, the party managed to ambush two more Goblins serving as gate guards, followed by a trio of wolves who actually managed to put Quint inches from death were it not for Rolen’s healing magic.

Feeling a bit adventurous, Quint next decided to climb a latrine fissure and discovered Klarg, his pet wolf Ripper, and the nearly dead body of Sildar Hallwinter. The party split up to form a “hammer and anvil” style attack, and they launched into the bugbear (and the two Goblin allies he summoned) with relish. Things got a bit dicey, but Klarg was soon defeated and Sildar healed enough to travel.

Regaining his equipment and bearing, Sildar told the party there was much they needed to know, and Gundren needed saving, but that would all have to wait until they escaped this hideout and arrived at the safety of Bramwell’s walls…

S1E3: Bramwell, Assassinations, and the Red Brands
The arrival at Bramwell, and distressing news.

Within the gates of Bramwell, the heroes were quick to turn over the supplies Gundren had hired them to deliver as well as the cargo they found in the Cragmaw hideout. Using that money (along with the coin Sildar Hallwinter had paid them to escort him, they resupplied and re-equipped, but not before getting word about both the assassination of King Justinian IV and about a group of bandits called the Red Brands who had moved in several months ago and had put this city into a reign of terror at the hands of their leader, a man named Glassstaff. Clearly, something must be done about this.

The group wanted to find a place to crash for the night and while Dargale, Rolen, and Torinn headed for the Yawning Portal, Quint went to the Sleeping Giant taproom, where he encountered four Red Brands trying to harass the barmaid names Jenny and rob an old man Jenny had called Old Man Tanner. Their leader tried to strike first, but after a few stabs Quint brought his axe down and crushed him, followed by the next guy to step up. The final two cut Tanner’s coinpurse and ran only to be tackled by Torrin and Dargale who had been alerted to the fight when Jenny had managed to escape.

With the group reunited, they interrogated the remaining Red Brands about their base and started making plans for the assault of Tresendar Manor, the former home of the Tresendar noble family that was now the Red Brands base of operations.

Breaking the Red Brands...

And so it came to pass that Dargale, Quint, Rolen, and Torinn, having heard from a young boy about a secret back door into the Redbrands hideout, snuck in and encountered a Nothic, a twisted former wizard who made a pact with demons.

They fought bravely, but not before the Nothic could alert every brigand in the base (including their leader, Glassstaff) to the intruders. Easily two dozen thugs and the wizard descended upon them and through a long and bloody fight the Legends killed all of them except for two of the thugs who – unable to even scratch the nearly-naked Dwarf – decided to return to their lives of drunken panhandling and petty con games.

Ransacking the hideout uncovered the magical longsword " Talon ," Glassstaff’s Staff of Defence, and a veritable treasure horde among the possessions of the bandits, most of it stolen from the local townsfolk. Of special importance, however, was a Dwarven journal detailing directions to both Cragmaw Castle and to Wave Echo Cave.

Of even more import, though, was a letter written by Black Spider and addressed to Lord Iarno Albrek – a one-time ally of Sildar Hallwinter who had set himself up as the Redbrand leader “Glassstaff.” It detailed the plan to kidnap the Dwarf Gundren Rockseeker and lay claim to the mysterious Forge of Spells in the Phandalin Mines.

With much to think on, bounties to collect and callings to pursue, the group returned to the now tranquil Sleeping Giant taproom to collect their thoughts and rest from the bloody ordeal beneath the old Tresendar Manor…
